Know your camera inside out!

I know there are weddings photographers out there who produce fantastic work by shooting in ‘P’ (program) or ‘A’ (Aperture) mode on their cameras but in my opinion, in order to get the very best results, it is always best to shoot in full manual ‘M’ mode.

I used ‘A’ mode for the first 10-15 weddings which I covered, but it was only when I switched to shooting in manual that I really gained confidence as a wedding photographer and felt as though I could cope with even the worst lighting conditions.

Don’t forget the 3/4 length bride and groom portrait

As any wedding photographer will tell you, weddings go fast. Very fast. In the UK, the “norm” is to take all the group photographs and shots of the bride and groom alone, in the gap between the wedding ceremony finishing and the start of the wedding breakfast.

From a wedding photographer’s point of view the likelihood is that this won’t allow you as much time alone with the bride and groom as you would ideally like – actually, you can virtually guarentee that you won’t have as much time as you like!

Welcome to Wedding Photography Advice - a new site, launched on St. Valentine's Day 2010, aimed at helping new and aspiring wedding photographers.

I'm Neil Redfern and I myself am a wedding photographer based in Manchester in the UK. I have been covering weddings for almost 4 years now but still have much to learn. In fact, one of the main reasons for setting up this site was to help me to continue improving further as a wedding photographer!
